Stone, Rock and Gravel is also more of a concept book, covering the use of stone and similar materials for landscape design purposes. Horticultural advice is included, recommending types of plants suitable for specific areas, such as screed gardens and rock walls, rock gardens, ponds, alpine, screed and dry river beds, and potted rock gardens.

Practical project instructions cover the construction of small rock gardens, installing a pond with a flexible liner and a pump for a waterfall, building a boulder water feature, a variety of planting schemes for rock gardens (designing for colour and texture, sun and shade), and drainage details such as building a soakway. Some interesting stonework projects are given an overview, including dry stone walls and walkways.
