As with Turning Wood, Turning Boxes is intended to complement Raffan’s book of the same name.
After an introduction on preparing blanks from logs, Raffan demonstrates the turning of three different boxes - one with a suction fit lid, another with a threaded lid and a deep box.
For the first box, the chapters are Suction Fit Lid Design, Turning the Inside of the Lid & the Box, Fixing a Split and Finishing the Inside, Fitting the Lid to the Base, Shaping the Profile, Getting the Fit Just Right, Re-chucking the Base and Finishing.
To turn the box with the threaded lid, there is an introductory chapter, then Threading the Lid, Turning the Base, Threading the Base and Finishing the Box.
The final chapters are Roughing out a Deep Box, Hollowing the Lid & Base, Fitting the lid, Developing the Profile and Conclusion (finishing the box).
Turning Boxes is a thorough and well-presented introduction to making cylindrical boxes. It does not require that you have the book, but having both would be a bonus.
About the Author: Richard Raffan, internationally acclaimed for his turning and teaching, is the author of Turning Wood, Turning Projects, Turning Boxes, Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning and Turning Bowls.
