As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 122

The Utah Woodturning Symposium in the USA has been held every year since 1979 and has attracted the world's leading turners as presenters. In 2004 selected participants and presenters from the first 25 years of the Symposium were invited to send pieces to an exhibition titled Beneath the Bark, 25 Years of Woodturning. The book of the same name is a photographic record of these entries.

There are over 150 items, most presented as large colour photographs, two to a page. The range is very diverse and includes segmental turning, texture effects, inlay, colouring, fretwork, off-centre and architectural turnng.

Among the 139 turners represented are Australians: Vic Wood, Stephen Hughes, Guilio Marcolongo, Richard Raffan and Terry Martin and New Zealanders: Rolly Munro, Graeme Priddle, Gael Montgomerie, Shane Hewitt and Soren Berger. The other turners are from the USA, UK, Costa Rica, France, Norway, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Greece and Germany.

Beneath the Bark is a well-presented gallery of the work of many of the world's top turners. It will appeal to most turners and will inspire those interested in extending their skills. The book would make an ideal birthday or Christmas gift.
