While American woodturner, Bonnie Klein, is perhaps best known for her demonstrations of decorated turning, she has had a long association with the turning of small scale items. An interest in dolls' houses led to the design and manufacture of the Klein lathe which began production almost 20 years ago.
In Classic Woodturning Projects with Bonnie Klein, she describes the turning of a dozen small practical items - an acorn box, carrot pen, sunburst earrings, spiral chatter eggs, letter opener, stir fry spatula, spin top, tool handle, whistle, yo-yo, honey dipper and purse mirror. These items are fairly simple to make, quick to produce, require little wood and provide practical gifts.
The book is not intended as a beginner's book, but rather as an introduction to small scale turning and a variety of skills such as line burning, chatterwork (a turned effect reminiscent of chip carving) and colouring. Chatterwork appears on the top of the acorn box, outer face of the earrings, mirror rim, whistle body, tool handle, eggs, tops and yo-yos. The line burning is mostly used in conjunction with the chatterwork.

About the author: Bonnie Klein is internationally recognised for her turning skills, teaching skills and development of the mini lathe. Her work has been featured in American Woodturner, Fine Woodworking, Wood Magazine and more. In 2003, the American Association of Woodturners recognised her with an honorary Lifetime Membership for her contributions to woodturning.
