As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 143

English woodturner, David Springett is already well known for his Woodturning Wizardry books.

This book is a collection of odd and wonderful items that stretch the imagination while extending the woodturning skills of the turners who make them.

It begins with short chapters about wood (the kinds of wood most suitable for use in making the objects that the author is later to describe) and about holding methods and drawing shapes.

The remainder of the book is devoted to Projects. These begin with the Spring and Stick followed by Chinese Strings - both antique puzzles - and then an attractive, but rather odd looking Chess Set.

Next comes the first of the streptohedrons. These are bizarre looking objects which the author doesn’t try to define. Fortunately, this doesn't matter much, since Springett only wants to show you how to make them - ordinary streptohedrons (if the word 'ordinary' can be applied to such objects), star-shaped, marble-run and ribbon streptohedrons as well.

Among these projects there are also Boxes with a Twist and a Wave Bowl.

The end result of all this fun at the lathe and in the workshop (for many of the objects require further work after being turned) will be items that may not be immediately useful for anything except starting conversations, but will stand as testimony to your skill and Springett's ingenuity.
