As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 110

Patrick Spielman has written a number of first-class scrollsaw pattern books over the years and his latest, Fun & Easy Scroll Saw Projects is no exception. There are 235 scrollsaw patterns included, some by Spielman and his family and a number of original designs by prominent scrollsawers.

A feature of this book is that many of the designs are suitable for beginners and can be made in an hour or less without the need for expert sawing skills or fancy equipment - the more experienced scrollsawer will also find a number of projects to undertake. While wood is perhaps the most common material for scrollsaw pieces, Spielman also includes designs for a variety of materials such as perspex, metal and Corian.

Fun & Easy Scroll Saw Projects begins with basic techniques and information, followed by chapters that include Quick and Handy projects, Cutouts and Silhouettes, Clocks, Boxes, Logscapes and Personalised Projects to Miscellaneous Home Accessories. While the projects are supplied in imperial measurements, the conversion process is simple and shouldn't detract from the benefits this book has to offer.

Beginners will find the Workshop Calipers and the Paper Clips/Bookmarks in Chapter 2 achievable projects to undertake and a way of exercising their skills without being overly challenged. Spielman provides the drawings and instructions which are simple and easy to follow, and even offers advice on suitable materials.

The more experienced scrollsawers might find the Logscape projects will test their skills. Spielman begins by explaining the layering techniques that give a 'dimensional appearance' and the simulation of the half log effect through lamination. Twelve construction tips are then provided, followed by photographs to illustrate each step and the 3 different patterns that can be used.

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or experienced scrollsawer, Fun & Easy Scroll Saw Projects provides a wealth of patterns, technical tips and advice on finishes for your work, making it a worthwhile addition to your workshop library.
