As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 97 The attraction of the scrollsaw to so many woodworkers is its ability to create almost everything, from simple cut out forms to the most complex three-dimensional architectural models. This amazing machine can easily expand its output as the skill level of the operator rises, and its rising popularity is reflected in the growing number of publications devoted to scrollsaw projects. Simple Scrollsaw Projects is a collection of project articles for the scrollsaw, published by the Guild Of Master Craftsman Publications. They range from the simple to more advanced, with a good cross-section of subject matter, from toys to household decorations. Each project is detailed using clearly numbered step-by-step instructions, colour photos of methods, and - in almost all cases - full size patterns. The simpler projects include a mirror with decorative overlay, name plaque (with a pattern for bubble alphabet letters), a dolphin clock, Christmas decorations, a three tiered corner unit display shelf, a chess set and board, picture frame with mushroom decoration, and book ends with a rocket motif. On the practical home front, the Cook's Organiser - featuring a see through acrylic face to protect precious recipes from spills - is sure to appeal to many. Budding musicians will appreciate the music stand made from three simple parts, hinged in the middle, with a decorative saxophone cut out. More complex and involved projects are included, such as the castle - made with over 60 different blocks - decorated with a myriad of trees and bushes cut from plywood. Home furnishings can be made with the scrollsaw, too. Designs range from the nautical sailboat towel knobs and a mirror for the bathroom, to a window sill plant containers and shutters (the latter featuring a rooster and heart pattern). The Yin and Yang chopping block would kit out any kitchen quite stylishly, as would the Oriental style shelving unit. Imaginative playtime is catered for, with a large barn featuring a removable roof and two garage doors, as well as a stylised yard with a pond - perfect for the kids when they're playing with those small model plastic ducks, cows and other farm-yard animals. For the more ambitious and handi-craft oriented who like to share their talents with friends and family, the hand made Christmas cards might just fit the bill. Patterns include a Santa figure, Christmas candle, Noel lettering, Celtic knot design and a pair of mistletoe leaves. The window hangings would fall within the more advanced project category. These are designed in homage to Alphonse Mucha, a poster designer of the late 19th century. One hanger is an image of the actress Sarah Bernhardt, and the other is a female portrait adapted from a 1894 design for a calendar, commissioned by a then popular French magazine, 'La Plume'. These attractive intricate designs round out the eclectic mix of projects. There is sure to be something for everyone in this book, and a wide range of skills can be developed by trying out the great variety provided. Photos: Colour Units of Measurement: Metric Contents
