Saw Basketweave Projects Softcover Published by Fox Chapel Publishing Co. Inc., East Petersburg PA USA R.R.P.$19.90 ISBN 1-56523-103-1 |
As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 142 The basketweave pattern has a special attraction that's hard to define - whether its used in a fancywork box or a fence. This book is an excursion into the world of basketweave as applied to baskets, though this reviewer believes the term box should justifiably be applied to some of the 11 projects. As usual for scrollsaw project books, this one consists principally of drawings accompanied by relatively small passages of text. The first project is a small Pencil-Pen Holder for which an optional lid may be made. (Details are also given for the lid.) The Holder is made by cutting 9 identical shapes, then putting them one on top of the other but displacing them in such a way that the shapes form what appears to be basketweave on the outside. This is the technique used for almost all of the projects and it is surprising just how effective it is - particularly when many of the projects are not circular, but are rectangular, rectangular with rounded corners, rectangular and tapered from top to bottom... There's a Tissue Box, a Planter Box, a Tapered New Hampshire Basket, an octagonal Victorian Bride Basket (with Lid) and a ball footed Dublin Basket. There's also one Basket that doesn't have any basketwork on it, the 1880 New England Basket with Handle, which was included say the authors, simply because it is a beautiful basket. Once you've seen how John Nelson and William Guimond achieve a basketwork appearance with a scrollsaw, you will probably want to start to making your own designs using the same methods.
