The Missing Shop Manuals for the Jointer and Router are - like the other books in this series already reviewed - primers which present valuable information about machine and tool operation in a concise and easily digestible format.
The text on the back cover of one of these books offers this reason for their publication.
When you unpack a new Jointer, the enclosed manual doesn't venture much beyond basic safety, assembly and setup. That leaves some head-scratching when it's time to turn it on and start surfacing a board. Where's the manual that covers all the things your new Jointer is designed to do?
The Missing Shop Manual... takes the next step with you. In addition to explaining the basics of safety and setup, this handy reference manual will help you get the most for your money by getting the most from your equipment...
This book begins with a well illustrated presentation of the basics of the machine and the cutter bits that are used with it. This is followed by an explanation of the setting up of the machine and its use with both simple guides and in a router table.
The topics covered in the remainder of the book are so many and diverse that only a small number can be addressed here.
They include the use of the router as a surfacer, basic edge shaping, laminate trimming, making raised panels, making mouldings, cutting grooves and inlaying.
Line drawings and descriptions are given for numerous jigs - for purposes ranging from rounding corners, cutting circular grooves and hinge mortices, to cutting lock mitre or dovetail joints and routing a mortice and tenon.
The books are clearly written with informative line drawings and photos.
Although aimed principally at the person who has just acquired the relevant tool or machine, the books provide quickly accessible information which would be of value to anyone wishing to refresh their memory.
