Very few workshops are planned
from the start. They often begin with no more than a bench and expand irregularly
as their owners acquire machines and tools in pursuit of their changing interests.
The
result is usually inefficient and may even be unsafe. Deciding
what to do - how to build your own ideal workshop that is uniquely suited to the
kind of work you want to do - is a challenge. How
to Build a Great Home Workshop is designed to help you meet that challenge.
Compiled by the editors of WOOD magazine (a US publication), it is a huge collection
of ideas about everything associated with building and equipping the home workshop.
There are chapters on customising the workshop space, setting up dust extraction,
heating systems, the workbench and descriptions and plans for a wide range of
storage facilities you can build. Chapter
6 - The Workbench: Heart of the Shop - is typical. It offers plans and instructions
for making six kinds of bench including one with a built-in dust collection system,
plans for a lift-up router table as well as notes on specially strengthening and
also flattening a bench top. There
is enough information here to keep you busy for months, maybe years, revising
and improving the place in which you work. Photos:
