As reviewed in House & HOME Issue 19 The Stanley Book of Woodwork covers the basics of woodworking, using of course, the range of Stanley handtools to illustrate the methods involved and the tools required. While not revolutionary in its treatment of the essentials of woodworking, the extensive use of colour photographs and clear drawings in addition to the text (written in note form rather than continuous prose) should appeal to the modern novice and hopefully make the information a little easier to grasp. To complete the book there are six pieces of furniture detailed as projects with full drawings, cutting list and step-by-step instructions. They are a woodwork bench, bookcase, child's desk, blanket chest, bedside cabinet and small table. Though the projects use only basic skills as described in the earlier chapters in the book, the finished items are much more attractive than the crude offerings often found in basic guides to woodworking and are not dissimilar in appearance to the better quality stock found in a Whitewood or Pine furniture outlet. Of course, the advantages of building the furniture yourself are the pride you gain in your own workmanship and the option to use timbers other than Pine. The Stanley Book of Woodwork should interest those taking up woodworking and also teachers seeking suitable woodworking projects for their students.
