As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 140 Windy Hill Woods are the publishers of two books about decorative Wagon Wheels that were reviewed in the last issue (139). Model Stage Coach is another of their titles. Model Stage Coach is about making a model ‘designed after the famous Wells Fargo Stage Coach. It’s a sizeable model, the coach itself, together with its trunk, boot and driver seat, being just a little under 300mm long. There are dimensioned patterns for each piece and some 20 pages of step by step instructions. They include notes detailing items such as doors, hand brake, curtains, canvas covers and roof railings. The only components not included in these instructions are the wheels. For these, you must refer to the book, Wooden Mini Wheels. This book is similar to the first two previously reviewed, but deals with decorative wagon wheels of the appropriate size for the Model Stage Coach. Perhaps the work in these books should be classified as craft rather than woodworking for there is no difficult shaping or jointing to perform. But it does require some familiarity with handtools and a scrollsaw would be a welcome help for such tasks as cutting out the windows. The most important feature of the books is, however, that they offer a relatively simple and enjoyable means of achieving an unusual result — the creation of an attractive model from an era long past and a short lesson in the construction of the coaches that used to ply the long dusty roads of not only America but also Australia.
