Many people baulk at the word unique. After all, it's an absolute and not all that many things in the world are really unique. But if Jerry Syfert's laminated projects aren't unique, they certainly come close.
Syfert's book, Unique Wood Lamination Projects, begins with a short discussion about tools, general methods and the laminating of wood.
Next, the author uses two pages to introduce the basket-weave form of lamination. If you've not tried this before (and it's unlikely that you have) and you have a bandsaw, your first reaction might well be to drop the book and head for the workshop, to try out this fascinating technique. Two examples of the use of this kind of lamination are given - a box and a desk clock - and these are enough to demonstrate its potential.
Next comes the layered puzzle - another two pages. This is described as: simply two or more jigsaw puzzles stacked on top of each other (layered) and contained within its own box. The object of the puzzle is to dump it out and then reassemble it back in the box.
These puzzles are followed by four desk clocks in various forms of laminations, then four more puzzles including a 10 piece Table and Chair Puzzle.
After that, there's a laminated Piggy Bank, another Basket-Weave Box (larger and more complex than the first), a stunning Kitchen Cutting Board, a Lazy Susan and yet more puzzles.
All of the projects are accompanied by good photos and where necessary, simple drawings.
A bandsaw is essential for this kind of work and some of the projects would be difficult to make without a thicknesser. However, the techniques employed are relatively simple and the results that can be achieved are... well... unique.
