As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 134

There seems to come a time in the life of every woodworker when the attraction of clock making becomes irresistible.

There are any number of reasons why this should happen, but perhaps the main ones are that clocks are useful additions to any home, they make excellent gifts and constructing even a Grandfather clock doesn't take up a lot of workshop space.

The biggest problem in getting started in clock making is finding a good plan, one that satisfies your particular needs, one that can be made without having to buy much in the way of extra tools or equipment and, maybe most important of all, a plan that challenges but doesn't outstrip your level of skill.

Clock Making - 18 Antique Designs for the Woodworker contains 18 plans, carefully detailed and presented with brief but comprehensive instructions. All of them require accurate joinery. Some demand a little carving skill while others need some expertise in turning.

A few, like the Mission Shelf Clock and the Cottage Clock, would be relatively easy to make while others, such as the Grandfather Clock, would test the skills of a more experienced woodworker. However, none of the designs appear overly difficult, so even a novice might expect to be able to progress through the projects of increasing complexity.

All of the designs are aptly described as 'antique'. Among them are a Pillar and Scroll, Column, Ogee, Steeple, Figure Eight, Banjo and Gingerbread Clock. Since the book was written in the USA, some of the designs are not immediately familiar, though the Schoolhouse Clock is one we more commonly call a Railway Clock.

This book will appeal to those who feel the urge to attempt clock making for the first time, as well as those wish to expand the clock making expertise.
