As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 133 The title of this book may suggest to some that it is about making clocks with wooden frames, shafts, gears and levers. It isn’t. Only the cases of the clocks are made of wood - but what a variety of wooden cases this author presents! In a brief (16pp) introduction, John Nelson defines many of the kinds of clock that can be housed in wooden-cases - Tall, Shelf, Column and Splat, Column, Ogee, Calendar, Steeple, Cottage, Figure Eight, Banjo, Schoolhouse, Regulator, Gingerbread, Black Mantel, Mission and Tambour. He then spends a few pages on Clock Components before providing a carefully illustrated, step-by-step demonstration of Clock Construction using one of his later projects as an example. The remainder of the book is devoted to the projects, 37 of them: Wall Clocks, Desk clocks, Shelf clocks, Long-Case and Grandfather clocks - clocks for the kitchen, the pantry and the office. Each project begins with a photo of the finished clock followed by detailed drawings. Some, like the Cuckoo Clock, incorporate scrollwork, others, like the Grandfather Clock, are comprised of multiple components; others again, such as the Pyramid Clock and the Early Mission Shelf Clock are simply made from a small number of pieces of solid wood. Even a woodworker with limited skills would be able to tackle the construction of some of these clocks and could then progress towards the more challenging projects as they gained further experience.
