Recycle unwanted or discarded timber into practical everyday items with assistance from The Used Lumber Project Book. There are 13 step-by-step projects suitable for woodworkers of all levels, with detailed drawings and photographs. Items include simple Mixed-Wood Boxes, a Desk Caddy, Bench and Country-Style Sofa Table.

A brief introduction outlines the benefits of using recycled timber, followed by a chapter on sources of supply offering tips on where to find material (predominantly packing crates) and how to dismantle and prepare the timber for use. Since this is a US publication, readers may find alternative sources to those listed in the book. After the project chapters, the book concludes with a gallery section illustrating some of the more creative uses of recycled wood.

Each project consists of dimensioned drawings including plans, elevations and joinery details, and a step-by-step photo gallery of the construction process. While the drawings are dimensioned in Imperial measurements, the cutting list includes Metric equivalents.

Many of the projects are relatively simple, such as the Coasters and the Rustic Toolbox. Most involve features such as dovetails, turning, curved cutting, routing or advanced marking out techniques, making the items more interesting to build without being too difficult.

Probably the most challenging project in The Used Lumber Project Book is the Country-Style Sofa Table. The top features routed edges and the legs are turned, with three types of joints used in the sofa's construction - butt joint, machine cut mortise and tenon, and sliding panel. This would suit the intermediate to advanced woodworker.

Although this book features practical and interesting projects that are ideal for recycled timber, they can also be built from new materials.
