As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 121 Michael Dresdner, a well-known contributor to US woodworking magazines, has written Wood Finishing Fixes which answers over 175 questions about wood finishing. Topics covered include choosing a finish, surface preparation, application, solvents, repairing problems and maintaining finishes. While the questions frequently mention American timbers and products, the answers have general application to most timbers and usually specify the type of product rather than a brand name. Equivalent products are available here, with the exception of latex paint. However, as the answers indicate, latex has been superceded by modern acrylics, even in the US. The questions and corresponding answers are presented one or two to a page and usually include colour photographs. A heading in the top corner gives an indication of each topic, but to chase up any particular question, it may be quicker to use the index at the back. Wood Finishing Fixes is not an introduction or guide to finishes. Rather it is a very useful addition to such books, providing handy tips and explanations of problems that the finishing books often overlook. About the author: Michael Dresdner is a nationally known finishing expert with over 20 years' experience in the field. He teaches and writes on finishing for Woodworker's Journal and other woodworking magazines.
