As reviewed in House & HOME Issue 40

Pine is commonly used for household projects because it is an economical and easy-to-work timber, and readily available. It can be joined successfully with glue and screws, and takes nails quite well. Its drawbacks are that it is soft, tends to bruise easily and can appear blotchy when a stain is applied unless a sealer coat is put on the timber first.

It is usually sold dressed all round (DAR) in a variety of dimensions from your local hardware store. DAR means it's prepared so all four faces are square to each other and flat. This eliminates the need for expensive equipment to transform the timber from a rough board to a usable product.

Pine Furniture Projects utilises DAR Pine to construct a variety of projects for different areas of the home. The kitchen can benefit from the addition of a simple stool, or maybe a more advanced project like the gate-leg table. A small kitchen spice cupboard offers an attractive storage space that's sure to help clear up some of the countertop confusion. A work trolley with chopping block top will test the woodworking skills of the more experienced.

The bedroom gets a lift from projects such as the bed head, night table, a chest of drawers and a blanket chest. These final three introduce the reader to the finer points of carcass construction and give a really good grounding in furniture making.

For the home office or work area, there is a computer desk, set of desk drawers and a chair (though the chair looks a little uncomfortable to sit on). There's also a bookcase to help organise books and more paperwork.

The projects range from simple to moderately difficult and a dowelling jig, router and drill are the most extravagant pieces of equipment required. Pine Furniture Projects is full of useful ideas for the home, suitable for the novice to experienced handyperson.
