Extract from back cover of book:

For more than 75 years, students have traveled to the foothillls of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains to study at Penland School of Crafts, a world-renowned education center with courses in a variety of media.

Greatly expanded since the first woodworking class in 1942, Penland's wood program now includes such areas as joinery, surface treatment, carving and more. This remarkable volume showcases ten of the talented furniture makers who have taught at the school and are considered leaders in their field.

These fine craftsmen are photographed demonstrating the structural and decorative techniques for which they are known. There are also personal essays that describe each artist's history, inspirations, influences, and methods, accompanied by captivating photographs of their work. Some of the pieces blur the distinction between furniture and sculpture, and many of the skills presented here are applicable to both areas.

Examine how Curtis Buchanan assembles a Windsor Chair; Doug Sigler uses quick and accurate mold-making to produce bent laminations; Paul Sasso creates evocative, multi-layered paint surfaces; John Clark crafts complete inlaid panels with veneer; Craig Nutt develops designs using models and digital technology; and much more.

Galleries with examples of other woodworker's pieces broaden the concepts presented and provide additional inspiration.
