As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 77 V.J. Taylor, a respected author and former editor of Woodworker magazine, has written Construction of Period Furniture for aficionados of period furniture and woodworking techniques. The book begins with a 52 page treatise on traditional construction methods, joinery and finishing materials. Basic instructions for carving decorative period mouldings and veneering using traditional and modern techniques are just some of the subjects detailed. The later includes a discussion on handling curved surfaces, the use of a veneer hammer, suitable adhesives and clamping methods. Construction methods for dovetailed drawers and frame and panel carcases are included. The ultimate objective of this material is to provide some background knowledge in order to successfully complete the 28 projects in the book. These include a Pembroke table with cabriole legs, six other types of table, six different chairs and a settle, a long case clock, a book press, a whatnot, several cabinets, chests of drawers, a cradle, stool, bed head and a four poster bed. All of the projects come complete with construction notes, measured drawings and cutting lists. The drawings - made by the author himself - are of the highest quality, and many of the curved elements are drawn on grids to facilitate enlargement and copying. Several of the more complex projects are illustrated with 3-dimensions drawings, to aid in assembly.
