Extract from back cover of book: Drawing from the beautiful and ancient art of Asian brush painting, Craig Vandall Stevens introduces a unique form of chip carving to the hobbyist. With clean flowing fines the knife creates delicate images in wood, relying on the play of the grain and the light to bring the images to life. These designs can be used in a number of ways. They make beautiful wall hangings on their own, or can be used as a decoration on plates, boxes, and screens. The book takes the carver step-by-step through the carving process, beginning with an introduction to the tools and the wood. Every carving step for two projects is included with a clear colour photograph and a concise description of the carving technique that is used. The patterns are included as is a gallery of variations and applications. About the Author: Craig Vandall Stevens designs and builds one-of-a-kind furniture in his one-person shop in Sunbury, Ohio. He studied furniture making at the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program in northern California, a program renowned for its excellence in craftsmanship and attention to detail. There, under the instruction of master cabinetmaker Jim Krenov, he developed an extensive background in traditional cabinetmaking techniques and hand skills. The focused environment of the college became the setting for Craig to begin exploring the delicate art of marquetry and continue his refinement of chip carving.
