As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 136 On the twelfth page of Chip Carving: Design & Pattern Sourcebook, there is a photo showing the tools needed for this craft. Those unfamiliar with Chip Carving may be astounded by how few are required to produce the elegant and beautiful carvings that fill this book. This is Wayne Barton's fifth book. A professional woodcarver, he received his formal training in Brienz, Switzerland and his carvings are now in private collections in Europe, Asia and North America. Not surprisingly, among those tools on page 12 are a stabbing knife and cutting knife of the author's own design. Despite Barton's command of the subject, this is a straight-forward book about Chip Carving which would be of as much interest to the novice as to the experienced carver. The book begins with chapters on Tools & Materials, Understanding Drawings (specifically the drawings in this book), and Laying Out and Transferring Patterns. The rest of the book is then devoted to designs and patterns, illustrated with both photos and drawings of Chip Carvings in a number of categories. These are: Lettering, Geometric Designs, Designs for Cabinets/Furniture, Positive Image Designs and Free-Form Design. This book, as its sub-title indicates, is intended as a source book. Those who are already familiar with Chip Carving will be guided to explore new aspects of the craft, while those who are just starting out, will find inspiration to begin their journey.
