As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 119

Just under half of Chainsaw Carving - the Art and Craft, is a picture book divided into sections illustrating the work of chainsaw carvers. Some sections occupy no more than a page. Others such as the first, devoted to the author and his work, are more extensive.

MacIntosh made his first chainsaw carving in 1960. Since then, he has developed his interest in the craft into a multi-faceted business. His first book on the subject (The Chain Saw Craft Book) appeared in 1980, he has written some 20 articles for Chip Chats magazine and runs his own woodcarving shop.

When discussing chainsaw carvings and their makers, the author's writing is relaxed and anecdotal. The photos he has collected are often inspirational.

The second part of the book contains a primer on chain saw use plus a very well illustrated 38 page introduction to chainsaw carving which includes an instructional project - the carving of a life-size heron.
