As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 161 Many of those who take up wood carving are heard to remark that it is not the esoteric art that they thought it would be. They discover that they, too, can learn to carve and, with growing interest, the acquisition of appropriate tools and careful practice, they begin to produce work of which they are proud. There are, however, common stumbling places. One of these is when they want to go beyond carving a face that simply looks like a face and carve either a likeness of a person or a face that conveys a recognisable emotion. This is the subject of Harold Enlow's Carving Faces Workbook. Enlow is a well known craftsman, a founding member of the Caricature Carvers of America and a highly respected and experienced teacher. The book is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the carving of specific facial features. This is the list: Basic Open Eye, Sleepy or Drunk Eye, Angry Eye, Woman’s Lips, Lips with a Moustache, Frowning Lips, Basic Hair, Curly Hair, Pointed Nose, Wide Nose, Bulbous Nose and Basic Ear. It is the author's contention that mastering basic facial features is essential before tackling a whole face. The second part of the book presents a series of seven projects. The first is a Female Face, then a Cowboy, followed by a Native American Chief, the inevitable Santa Claus, a Witch, an Ugly Face and finally, a Wood Spirit. The book is well illustrated with step-by-step photos (and, where necessary, a few drawings). The text is brief and to the point, the few general comments being confined to the introductory pages.
