As reviewed in The Australian Woodworker Issue 151 Chip carving is a specific discipline within the general craft of woodcarving. The work is performed with only a few tools and the results are immediately identifiable. Because, as its name suggests, chip carving involves the raising and removal of chips from the surfaces of a workpiece, it is inherently safer than many other forms of carving. Yet the results can be spectacular. The book begins with descriptions of Standard Chip Carving, then Shallow Chip Carving, Old-World Style Chip Carving and Free-form Chip Carving. These are followed with brief explorations of Individual Styles, Decorations and Christmas Ornaments. The remainder of the book is comprised of projects ranging across Ornaments (a snowflake, angel, honeycomb, leaf, tree and geometric patterns), chip carving on wooden eggs, floral chip carvings, a wedding plate, a classic spoon rack and a serving tray. All of the projects consist of step by step instructions, generously illustrated with photographs. The book should appeal to the novice who has never undertaken any woodcarving and also to intermediate carvers who wish to try a different style.
